Reducing cost and improving IT productivity through Service Management
Oct. 27, 2010 - Research released in the last week by the IT Job Board provides an interesting insight for Operations Managers who are struggling to manage staff productivity and cost. The research found that IT Support now accounts for 50% of all advertised IT roles, while IT Management roles have halved to 32%.
This comes at a time when CIO's are battling to reduce costs and according to the IDC Data Centre Management Survey 2010, much of the increased cost in recent times has been created by increases in operational head count. Some 25% of organisations are still managing their servers and storage manually, which has lead to higher costs when compared with companies using data centre management tools.
With regard to increasing productivity the IT Job Board survey looked at what makes individuals more productive.
The results suggest that the main motivators for IT professionals are:
- Satisfaction of finishing a project and knowing "I've done a good job" (85.6%)
- Being able to see progress by ticking off tasks (60%)
- Working on their own (60.4%)
- More effective in the morning (58.6%)
The chief demotivators were:
- Lack of clarity in instructions for the task in hand (65.8%)
- Noisy offices (51.4%)
- Interruptions from colleagues (48.6%)
The survey suggests that many people are extending their productivity by prolonging their day, either by working overtime, working from home, or starting early. Whilst much of this isn't a surprise to many, it underlines the requirement for IT Operations' Managers to be making the most of Systems Management tools. These can not only reduce operational costs but importantly they enable managers to reallocate skilled resources into more interesting and rewarding projects.
Mat Middleton, Commercial Director at Innovise commented "We have seen a significant difference in those organisations that have adopted Enterprise Service Management tools and processes. They have not only been able to reduce IT operations cost and increase productivity but they have also been able to demonstrate added value to the business through refocusing resources on more strategic programmes."
